Lupus was a wolf again. She softly padded through the cracked earth. The moonlight was soft and the night chill bit through her shaggy layer of fur. Her red eyes took in every stir of leaves, every movement of the underbrush. Not a soul sensed her prescence. She lurked among the whispering shadows of the trees. Then, she was out again, in the moonlight, the earth moving swiftly under her paws. Her pace quickened and now she was running, her paws pounding against the brown earth. Lupus was racing on the ground. This was how it felt like to be free. Her breath came easily, as if running was her second nature. And it was.
Lupus raced with the night, feeling the wind play over her fur, cool tendrils of light pleasure. And then...the sun started to stain the sky with color. It peeked out from the horizon and she slowed, panting with exhertion. The night had gone again. She was trotting now, toward the shadow of a cave in the canyonside. She padded in, hoping that it wasn't being used by another traveler. Whoever it was, they had left and the remains of a meal were scattered beside a pile of burnt logs. She nosed through it hopefully and gnawed on a half-eaten leg of some animal. Most likely a rabbit. Then, feeling little comfort from her meal, she turned back into human, feeling a little reluctant. The night was over. She straightened her tunic brushing off a little dust. Time to walk... She groaned inwardly at the thought of hiking through the small trail. It would be a hard going with plenty of danger. Only fun in wolf form.
She stepped out of the cave, blinking at the early morning light. She picked out her way among the litter of sharp rocks, threatening to trip her. Any person, human or elf, would be very very brave to walk through this canyon...that or crazy. Lupus came to a small precipe in the path and took a running jump. She made it. But barely. Sighing, she sat on a boulder. Perhaps she should have just slept the day away but she wanted to test her limits, to see how far and long she could go without sleep or rest. She smiled at the thought and her smirk would have sent shivers down the spines of the strongest of men. Lupus loved danger. Loved the risk. The exhileration. To venture into the unknown. That was what she lived for...that and nothing else.
